Welcome to Visit Sleeping Bear this website was created to provide visitors with helpful and interesting information about the Sleeping Bear Dunes region. This website features the intellectual knowledge and experience of Ranger Bill Herd, the longest-serving Sleeping Bear dunes National Lakeshore Interpretive Ranger to date. Read Bill’s biography and retirement announcement.
Ranger Bill’s Visit Sleeping Bear was created by me, Bill’s favorite daughter, as a legacy tribute to the man that taught the world why this place is significant on the global scale, he actually taught me why this is the best place to live in the entire world, but I don’t want to encourage you to move here, so I’m going to stick with why you should visit.
I could not have been more fortunate to grow up with the father I have. From the minute I was born he began instilling his love of this region into me. Throughout my childhood I spent a great amount of time in the park with my father. A great deal of what and how people experience the park is from my Dad’s work. He started with the park service shortly after it was born before there was a visitor center and when their headquarters were in Frankfort, Michigan. He created most of the literature that you’ll find on signs, brochures, and he curated the exhibits. He saved and created, the lifesaving station at Glen Haven, and Port Oneida historical district.
In my opinion, there is no one in the world that knows more about the cultural, historical, geographical, and biological significance of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. My goal is to get that information out of my Dad so others can learn and experience this region through his unwavering knowledge and passion for it.
