South Manitou Island Lighthouse -to shine again

The South Manitou Island will be lit on May 30th at dusk.
This is the first time the lighthouse has been lit for the shipping season in 51 years. The last time the light was lit was in 1958. Later that year it was discontinued by the U.S. Cost Guard and the Fresnel lens was removed. The location of the original lens is unknown. The Manitou Island Memorial Society and the Manitou Island Transit have raised the money to have a replica Fresnel lens constructed.
May 30th the light will be lit and will shine every night from dusk to dawn until fall.
The light will be visible from the shorelines of Empire to Leland.
grab your blanket, and lawnchairs and head to your favorite beach for this historic event.
Folks watching from Sleeping Bear Point will be able to see three lighthouses, Point Betsie, South Manitou Island and the North Manitou Shoal lighthouse.
